The Meat Planet has featured in many sci-fi horror films and an episode of the 50s TV Series Flash Gordon about a beautiful princess who is taken hostage on the planet and forced to become fat and wicked.

British band Joy Division based the cover for their album ‘Unknown Pleasures’ on the mountains of The Meat Planet (See below). Naming the record after the, (at that time), ‘unknown pleasure’ of tasting the planet’s “turbulent interior”

Singer, Ian Curtis was said to be deeply disturbed by the first satellite images of the planet’s surface, saying it looked to him like “a terrible cosmic joke”. In an interview with the NME in 1988 he said “It haunts my dreams. Literally consumes my nightmares.... The image of that globe... rotating through the sheer force of revulsion it feels for it’s own surface."
